ALCALÁ DE HENARES
Alcalá de Henares has countless monuments throughout its streets and squares.
Discover Hyppolitus’s house, one of the most important Roman archaeological remains of Alcalá de Henares, the headquarters and class venue of the Universidad Cisneriana and the Rectorate of the modern ‘complutense’ university.
The city’s name means «castle over the river Henares». That’s why a Castle on water waves, simulating the Henares river, appears on the emblem. It was established during the Celt-Iberian period (Ikesankom Kombouto or Iplacea) but it was the Romans who created the outstanding city called Complutum.
There have been several cultures in the city. Three coexisted in the city at one time.
Unesco declared it a World Heritage Site in 1998. This city is one of the new Spanish cities the UNESCO has classified as unique due to the University’s Rectorate and historic precinct.
The city is famous for its university, constructed because of Cardinal Cisneros, who made it a University Campus.
It is also a candidate for the 2016 European Capital of Culture. |
